Proposal Story!

Please bear with me…this is a wordy story! But I am so happy to share it 🙂

Mike totally caught me off guard with the proposal. Props to him for completely flooring me.  I will say that I was just shy of obnoxious asking him when he was going to propose and not one week before the day he did he told me that it would be a while as he had just started his job one month ago. Little did I know he had been planning this for a while and had already had the ring for a couple of weeks!!

On that Friday I was exhausted from work and called him and asked if we could just eat something quick at home so I wouldn’t have to cook and he said of course. After dinner he asked if I wanted to go to Local Culture(my biggest weakness) for frozen yogurt. I checked the website and they had my favorite flavor which we never catch so he said “you want to go now?” and I said yes thinking that we needed to make sure we got there before the students would eat all my precious cookies & creme!! I thought the yogurt was the highlight of my day but as we stood up to leave Mike asked if we could ride through campus as he never gets to go through there anymore since he works somewhere else. I thought nothing of this either as it was frequent that we would ride around town just for fun. He said he wanted to go out to South Farm and see if the observatory was open because he heard that it was supposed to be opening soon. Now there wasn’t a star in the sky that we could see so that should have tipped me off but hindsight is 20/20. We rode around the long gravel road to the observatory which of course was closed and there was this crazy bucking bull that looked like he wanted to kill us so I said that I was not going in there to even look at the observatory with that thing in the fence with me!

We kept going around that long road and over the scariest bridge of all time until I looked up and saw something dash out in front of us and told Mike to turn his bright lights on so we could see. It happened to be about 5-6 fawn that ran in front of us and Mike asked if I wanted to get out and look for them. I said okay and we got out of the car. South Farm is super dark so we couldn’t see anything so I was about to get back in the car when he said he had a present for me and popped the trunk and there was a tarp back there which kind of freaked me out for a minute until he moved it over and uncovered a huge picture mosaic of the two of us(above). I asked him what it was and he said it was a picture of us that was made of 3000 different photographs that had been taken in the last 3.5 years we had been together. I was amazed I thought it was the sweetest present that I have ever been given for all of about 15 seconds. I was bent over in the trunk examining all of the photos when he said “there are a lot of great memories in that picture huh” and I replied yes and when I turned around he was on one knee and said “do you want to make some more memories?” I remember very little detail of the next few minutes but I remember crying hysterically and asking if this was real haha. I fell to both knees on that gravel road(it hurt) but it was worth it. Mike said I had my hands over my mouth until I gave up the left one for the ring of course!! Next I jumped up and down for a while and then I said we needed to call our families which we did!! The Arnold’s were ecstatic even if they did already know it was coming sometime soon. I couldn’t ask for a better reception of the news from my family and friends. I will remember that day for the rest of my life. We actually took no photographs which is uncommon for me but it is that much sweeter that I have such a vivid memory of the event and I lived it fully without stopping to worry about a picture. I wish I could go back to that day so badly! I think the only thing that will top it will be the wedding!!

Beach Trip and DIY

Us on the car ferry going from Ft. Morgan to Dauphin Island

Wow this year is flying by. Today marks the end of the first half of the year! I cannot believe it, although I really can as it is June 30 and it is 102 degrees outside. Mississippi heat is a phenomenon that cannot be explained only experienced. It is the hottest place I have ever been and I hope to ever go! I digress! A couple of weeks ago I got to take a business trip down to the coast! Mike accompanied me and we spend a wonderful four day weekend at the beach! We ate extremely too much and got too much sun but it was a blast! It was our first time at the gulf in Alabama and it was so alien to see the oil and natural gas rigs out in the water there. We had a very informative couple of hours visiting with one of the scientific collaborators down at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab and that was the ‘business’ side of the trip! The rest of the time we spent relaxing, eating, shopping and exploring.

On another note, I have also been doing some more diy projects! I have many lined up at the moment but here are a couple that I have completed since my last post!
First is the coffee table. There is kind of a funny story behind this. After I painted the nightstands and the TV table for our bedroom I had the painting/diy itch so I started looking for pieces of furniture that we did not have that I could transform from drab to fab on the cheap(most importantly) so one day as I was browsing craigslist I saw a coffee table located here in Starkville and I showed it to Mike and he told me to call about it. As I was putting the digits in my phone randomly it showed up as the number of one of my friends here in town. She and her husband were selling off all of their furniture before they moved back home to North Dakota. She was originally selling the table for $15 but offered me the friend discount so I scored it for $10!! In the picture you will notice that the table is missing a drawer so we knew we needed to figure something out. Mike and I made a fake drawer front for the table before painting and attached it with Gorilla glue(which btw is totally awesome). Next I painted the table and let it dry forever. It is now in our living room and even though I cringe we lounge our feet on it constantly! I already had the black paint leftover from the other tables and all I had to purchase was the wood for the drawer front and a drawer pull for about $6.00 for both. So I spent less than $20 on this table which I am super stoked about! I need some accessories to put on top of it but I have a couple of ideas up my sleeve about that for a later project!

After: close up
After: loving the new rug from Tracy!

The second project I did last weekend while Mike was out of town. I have been wanting lamps for our ‘new’ nightstands for quite a while. However they are super pricey as you have to buy the bases and then the shades and we are quite limited in the home decor department here in Starkville. So while browsing some diy sites on the internet I came across a couple of people buying thrift store lamps and painting them to match their own decor so I decided that this may be a way that I could have cool, funky lamps and not have to pay an arm and a leg for them! I went to the local Salvation Army and jackpot, there were like 20 sad and pathetic old brass lamps just sitting there waiting to be saved. I found two that were matching and when I checked if they worked and they did they were as good as mine. For $4 each I couldn’t say no. These two were wood as well as brass and although I hadn’t seen anyone online paint a wood lamp I thought what the heck, I’ll try it.  I also picked up a solid brass lamp for $2 for the living room that I will reveal later(when I find the perfect shade). I left there and immediately went to Lowe’s and picked up some spray paint and primer and went home and got to work. This took me all of about 30 minutes of total painting although I did have to wait 2 hours between priming and painting and that was the hardest part. I actually bought the white drum shades from Lowe’s as well which was my largest expense at $14 each. However the price of the shades were worth it because even if I decide that I don’t want blue lamps anymore I can repaint them and still use the white shades. I picked the blue as I was trying to have another color in the room besides the gray and yellow and I tried to match the blue color to the blue in the fish picture above the bed. I love the finished product and it makes me happy every time I walk into my bedroom! This was my favorite project so far!
Before: so sad and blah

After: so funky and fresh!
After: Pumpkin enjoying the new lamps and bedding!

Second half of first project…

I am finally ready to reveal(yes I am humoring myself to think anyone cares) the second half of my first project. I am actually really happy how it turned out as it was one of the first things I attempted to paint. This table was given to me by my Grandmother. Before you gasp and think I am a terrible person for painting a table from Meme I will inform you that it is a particle board table that has been in her attic for I have no idea how long. It is far from an antique or special. It kind of fell into my lap. So when I moved here and brought my TV we decided that we could use this little dressing table as an impromptu television stand. It served its purpose but I hate the way it looked. I will say it I hate the light oak stain!! I always have. My mother loved her some light oak but although she and I are very similar we have different styles. I love deep stain with visible wood grain, black and cottagey style furniture. I cannot wait to have my own home to decorate and change! It is one of the things I look forward to the most! However I am living in the now and I am trying to make wherever I live the kind of home that I think of as beautiful! This table looks great now and totally matches our bedroom. I don’t really care for the huge TV that occupies it at this time. But it’s what I’ve got for now! I hope to one day use it as a cute dressing table with a framed mirror and have perfume and jewelry adorning it! Just girly enough for me 🙂

Before(terrible angle)

Primer Added
After! The Hardware looks fantastic up
close too! It looks like hammered metal!

I have a few more projects already on my to do list! I cannot wait to start them and have them adorn my home!

Stay southern,

New Hobby?!?

So I mentioned in my last post about my stress level and it being sky high right now. However I may have found a new hobby to help keep me busy and to be an outlet for my stress and creativity. A while back(like 1.5 years ago) when I moved here I brought down two little tables that were given to me. I wanted them to use as nightstands for our bed since we have such a low platform bed and these were little tables I thought why not. Well they serve their purpose well however they were unfinished wood. I have always wanted to paint them black to match our bed but I kept putting it off and saying to myself that I will do it when we are moved and settled(thinking that was right around the corner). Well I decided a couple of weeks ago that I need to stop waiting to live my life and just do it now. So as cheesy as this sounds the tables are what I decided to begin with! I figured it would be an easy enough start. I read all kinds of diy and home improvement blogs and they made it sound so easy. And you wanna know what? It was. If you know me at all then you know I am kind of prissy. I do not like getting dirty, sweaty or doing anything that could remotely ruin my clothing. However being outside sitting on the ground(gasp) sanding and painting(with paint on my clothes and body) I was totally not thinking about anything but the task at hand. I forgot about all my problems and just did what I set out to do. I turned something ordinary into something that I liked all in an afternoon! These tables aren’t anything special but they changed my mood and that makes them special to me 🙂 I also started another project that day which is not finished yet but I am excited to show you how it turns out! Here are some before and after pics(which I need to work on my technique for future projects). There is a learning curve to diy-ing and for blogging about it! I will learn though!

Before. Natural wood. I should have taken this at a different angle!
During. After a good sanding and 2 coats of Kilz primer(btw if you are using Kilz
spray primer work in a WELL VENTILATED area, yes I am speaking from experience)!

After. Finally dry and cured. I could have staged this better as well.
However I am so happy with the end result. Like I said these tables were nothing special
but now when I walk into my bedroom and everything matches like
I wanted for a long time I smile to myself!

I am so happy I did this(and the other project) that day. This may become a new hobby for me. I recently purchased a wood coffee table from Craigslist for $10, what a steal and I plan to paint it to match our home/style a little more. It’s funny what a little paint and a little elbow grease can do. The beauty of paint is that I can change it almost as quickly as I can change my mind 🙂

Catching Up

I am a bad blogger. It has been a while since I have checked in probably because this is a highly stressful time in our household. That does not mean that nothing fun has been happening it just means that I have a lot more things taking up my time that are not as fun 😦 However, I want to do a quick catch up post with mostly pictures to give a little insight into what we have been doing since my last post.

Mike’s 25th Birthday lunch at the Arnold’s!
My student researcher presented our work at a
student symposium here on campus. I am so proud of her!
Crawfish boil at the Picard’s.
Graduation Day!!! What a special day for Mike and I!
His hard work and dedication finally paid off!
There he is receiving his diploma and shaking hands with the university president!
My Master boyfriend!! So proud of him and we were both so happy that day!

We have some fun things coming up. We are headed to PTC to see Mike’s brother Danny graduate from High school soon and to spend time with the family. I plan to go and visit the HGTV Green Home while I am there as well(this is right up my alley) and I cannot wait! My fingers are still crossed about the future. Waiting is so very hard and straining on your mind though. I have to figure out a good way to de-stress and I may have a solution to my stress in my next post 🙂

Easter 2012

Flower arrangements with candy and peeps!

For Easter we traveled to Peachtree City to spend the weekend with the Arnold’s. We had a great time eating delicious food and decorating for the party prior to the Andrew’s ladies coming over! The decorations this year were top notch as we got very creative and made flower arrangements with tulips and candy! The Egg game and appetizer contest were fun as they always are! We ended the trip with a delicious brunch in the courtyard!

Easter brunch!

The next couple of weeks are going to be intense! Mike has a very exciting/stressful week this week then next weekend is Super Bulldog Weekend/Cotton District Arts Festival which we are very excited about!! Keep your fingers crossed for us 😉 Right now I am listening to John Mayer(of course because he is my favorite)! He has not put out any new music in a couple of years but he is releasing a new record next month and I am super excited! The first single released is called Shadow Days and it has some truly relatable lyrics. I hope our shadow days are  almost over and we can have the new start we have been longing for!

Tuscaloosa Airshow

This past weekend Mike and I headed to Tuscaloosa for an airshow. I have heard Mike talk about seeing The Blue Angels countless times so when I heard on the radio that they were coming there was no way I was going to let him miss them being so close. We awoke early and had a delicious breakfast at City Bagel and were on our way. Tuscaloosa is about an hour away and we arrived early getting a great parking place(we heard that it was a nightmare before so we planned ahead) We walked around the static display area seeing some pretty awesome planes/jets and even some pretty impressive Star Wars characters who’s costumes were pretty spot on according to Mike. We later made it over to the runway seating area and watched some of the aerobatic performances along with paratroopers and even a wingwalker. The final performance of the were the Navy Blue Angels and they lived up to all the hype. I am still amazed at the intelligence, talent and pure bravery it takes to fly these beautiful machines. It was truly a sight to be seen and I hope we go again soon! Mike seemed to have a wonderful time and that’s the only thing that mattered to me! We ended the day at Huck’s Place in Columbus for a delicious dinner! Even though we ended up pretty sunburned we had a great time!

Budweiser Clydesdales

This weekend we are headed to Peachtree City for Easter and the Egg Game!! Lots of pics to follow hopefully!

Spring Break

We have been back for a couple of weeks from our trip but we have been so busy I almost forgot to blog about our Florida adventure! We headed to Peachtree City to drop off our precious Pumpkin with the Arnold’s and with it being her first solo trip there I was nervous. I had no reason to be as she ended up sleeping in the bed with them and loving every minute. She is so spoiled! We headed to Orlando to meet up with Mary and Annie. The first night we just hung out at the resort and relaxed. Our plan for the next day was to head to Universal Studios. The weather forecast was supposed to be about 73 F with a 20% chance of rain. However when we arrived at City Walk it began raining and did not stop for the entire time we were there. We had a great time but ponchos were a must. After a day of riding everything without much wait we decided to head in from the rain. Mike and Tyler headed to HOB for a concert and the girls had a much needed girls night in! The next day we woke up early and headed to Islands of Adventure and arrived when it opened at 8 am. We hustled straight back to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and I was amazed. We all could not believe how awesome it was! We rode the new ride in the castle and it was incredible. Every little detail was thought of and I couldn’t get enough. Visiting there was my favorite part of the trip by far!! The next day we visited Hollywood Studios and Magic Kingdom. I love visiting Disney so much but this was the worst day we spent in Florida. There were so many people everywhere and things just weren’t going our way with timing and such! Our last day in O-Town we went to Downtown Disney and ate at The Earl of Sandwich(a fav of ours) and did some outlet shopping where I got some summer duds and my sweet boyfriend bought me a cute hat I had been eyeing. the next day we headed up to Jacksonville before heading back to Peachtree City to see our little girl and hang out with the Arnold’s. It was a great trip but it went by way too quickly!! I hope to take another trip down there soon but never again during spring break!!

Stay southern,

Anniversary!

So yesterday while on a run during the most beautiful weather we have had here this year I realized that March 1, 2011 marked a very important day for me. It was the day I started taking control of my life and began eating with a purpose and exercising regularly. Now one year later I am 33 lbs lighter, down 4 pant sizes and am a new and improved person inside and out! I could not have done it without some very special people in my life. Mike for his constant support, praise and those compliments I need on the days where I don’t feel so hot lol. Also for going along with all of the new foods and exercising with me as I could not have done this without my love! Ann Marie for her constant support throughout each day and keeping me sane at work! I have made an amazing life long friend/partner in crime through this journey! And finally to Meghan for her resilience during the end of last year she is a testament that you can do anything you put your mind to if you want it bad enough, she is an inspiration 🙂 My family has given me praise and support as well from far away! And they feed me the bad stuff when I am home(which I am grateful for)! I am not going to lie, that picture above is pretty amazing to me. I can see so much of a difference I cannot believe it! I feel so proud in this moment I hope this feeling lasts forever! I am so glad I decided to put those two together so I can visualize it myself. Now I am kicking myself for not taking starting measurements(I was too embarrassed of course)! Here are some more pics from the last year and the journey that I have been taking! I will start with some before pics so you can see(and I can be reminded) of just where I came from! Bear with me because I made these a little larger so you can hopefully see them a little easier 🙂
